Processing that requires particular attention to prevent cracks and breaks
Quartz glass and silicon are softer than typical ceramics, allowing for efficient processing.
However, this efficiency comes at the cost of clogging, where the diamond particles in the grinding wheel become obscured by a large amount of grinding dust.
The biggest concern when processing quartz glass and silicon is their fragility.
Processing quartz glass with a diamond grinding wheel is like using tiny diamond particles as hammers to break and grind the glass, resulting in countless microcracks. If excessive force is applied during processing, these microcracks will grow into larger cracks, leading to breakage.
At our company, we aim to minimize damage to the material during processing quartz glass.Specifically, this involves controlling tool runout, using high-grit diamond particles, sharp diamond particle shapes, and soft bonding wheels.
Processing conditions involve minimizing the depth of cut per grinding wheel rotation.Product edges require chamfering or rounding. Without chamfering, cracks can extend from microcracks remaining on the sharp edge, leading to breakage.Especially when a sharp edge is required and there is no specific requirement for a sharp edge, we apply a slight chamfer to the edge.
When the transparency characteristic of quartz glass is required, we perform lapping and polishing. We outsource this process to our partner companies.
