Highly complex machining requires the selection of optimal cutting tool materials and tool shapes
Molybdenum is manufactured by a material manufacturer that sinters molybdenum powder at high temperatures, followed by processes such as forging, rolling, and swaging. Therefore, it possesses both the properties of ceramics (which are prone to cracking, chipping, and fissures) and metals (which are prone to burrs and sharp edges).
Its machinability is not particularly poor, and it can be machined sufficiently with commercially available carbide tools. However, because the crystalline grains are hard and cause wear on the cutting tool tip, difficult machining requires the selection of a cutting tool material and tool shape appropriate for the specific process. At our company, we prioritize efficiency and perform machining under cutting conditions that minimize chipping and wear on the cutting edge.
The size of the crystalline grains varies depending on the temperature and time differences during the manufacturing process. In other words, the machinability of the material is affected by the manufacturing process, so it is necessary to obtain material with a controlled thermal history.
Furthermore, since molybdenum is a metal, it is electrically conductive, and wire electrical discharge machining can be used without any major problems.
