Thermal shock resistance: It is the temperature range in which a material can withstand rapid changes in temperature. The higher thermal shock resistance is, the lower the risk the material breaks due to rapid temperature changes. Glasses and ceramics are easy to break with abrupt temperature change.
The thermal shock resistance is related with low thermal expansion. For example, quartz glass has low thermal expansion with high resistance to thermal shock. Among ceramics, Boron Nitride and Silicon Nitride are high thermal shock resistant materials. These materials are frequently used in parts that are required to withstand extreme temperature fluctuation such as components for burners, engines and heaters.
Quartz glass has excellent thermal shock resistance. It will not crack even being immerced in the cold water after reaching 1000°C rapidly.
Boron nitride has a lot of excellent properties such as high thermal conductivity and high insulation property. But its most attractive property is remarkably low thermal expansion. The BN’s thermal expansion coefficient is the lowest among the engineering ceramics.
